Director of Race Engineering
We are seeking an experienced Director of Race Engineering to lead our technical operations for our two-car NASCAR team. This role will operate within our leadership structure to focus on maximizing our on-track performance. The successful candidate will oversee a team of six race engineers while working closely with our simulation department to drive continuous improvement in our competitive capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Setup Development (40%)
Lead development of baseline vehicle setups for various track types and racing conditions.
Drive innovative setup concepts and solutions to gain competitive advantages.
Analyze setup performance data and translate findings into actionable improvements.
Coordinate setup testing protocols and validation processes.
Ensure setup consistency and optimization across both race cars.
Work closely with technical departments (aero, powertrain, R&D, simulation, strategy).
Provide feedback to design and development teams based on race data.
Align with management on budget, resource allocation, and performance goals.
Approve final race weekend car setups in collaboration with engineering group.
Team Leadership & Engineering Guidance (40%)
Manage and mentor a team of six direct report race engineers.
Provide technical guidance and development opportunities for engineering staff.
Facilitate driver briefings and technical debriefs, pre and post event.
Ensure effective communication between drivers, crew chiefs, and engineering team.
Foster collaborative problem-solving and continuous learning environment
Direct trackside engineering operations during race weekends.
Collaborate with strategists to ensure competitive advantage through setup and race strategy.
Lead post-race technical reviews, identifying areas for improvement and future development.
Ensure compliance with series regulations.
Data Analysis (10%)
Oversee comprehensive analysis of telemetry, performance, and competitive data.
Identify performance trends and optimization opportunities.
Develop data-driven insights to support setup and strategy decisions.
Create performance reports and technical recommendations for leadership.
Simulation Correlation (10%)
Collaborate closely with Simulation Director Graham Gott's team.
Provide feedback on TRD simulation tools and model accuracy.
Validate simulation predictions against real-world track data.
Support continuous improvement of simulation processes and capabilities.
Bridge the gap between simulation predictions and trackside reality.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field
5-10 years of professional motorsport engineering experience
Proven leadership experience managing technical teams
Strong background in vehicle dynamics, setup development, and data analysis
Technical Skills
Proficiency with motorsport data analysis software and telemetry systems
Experience with simulation tools and model correlation (TRD experience preferred)
Deep understanding of NASCAR regulations, procedures, and competitive landscape
Advanced knowledge of race set up, development and execution
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Leadership & Communication
Demonstrated ability to lead and develop engineering professionals
Excellent communication skills with drivers, crew members, and management
Ability to make quick, informed decisions under high-pressure situations
Strong presentation and briefing capabilities
Experience conducting technical meetings and debriefs
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in engineering or related field
NASCAR Cup Series or Xfinity Series engineering experience
Experience with other major motorsport series (IndyCar, IMSA, F1, etc.)
Previous role as Race Engineer or Performance Engineer
Knowledge of aerodynamics, chassis dynamics, and powertrain systems
Experience with statistical analysis and predictive modeling

Reporting Structure
