WORLD WIDE TECHNOLOGY RACEWAY | RACE RECAP

MADISON, Ill. (June 2, 2024) – The NASCAR Cup Series made their way to World Wide Technology Raceway for the Enjoy Illinois 300 on Sunday, June 2. Joey Logano won the pole position for the 240-lap event. Last week’s winner Christopher Bell continued his run up front and won the first two stages but it was Logano’s teammates up front in the closing laps of the race. The No. 12 of Ryan Blaney looked to have the race won but with just a few laps remaining, he ran out of fuel, opening the door for the No. 2 of Austin Cindric to win the race. Below is a look at how the LEGACY MOTOR CLUB entries faired.

The No. 42 LEGACY MOTOR CLUB team had local partner, Bommarito Automotive Group dawning their Toyota Camry this weekend. The team struggled on grip and speed during Saturday’s practice and qualifying session, resulting in a 33rd starting spot for the 240-lap event. The No. 43 Family Dollar team driven by Erik Jones struggled during practice with a tight handling race car but the team went to work and found some speed in time for qualifying that would position them in 22nd for Sunday’s 240-lap event.

On lap 4 of the race, John Hunter Nemechek lost the handling of his race car that resulted in a spin off turn two. The No. 42 would join the tail of the field following a pit stop for tires, fuel and an adjustment. Nemechek would battle his way back and finish Stage 1 in 24th-position

From the beginning of the race, Jones was battling a loose-handling Family Dollar Toyota Camry XSE as well as some steering issues for most of the day. Despite the handling and steering issues, Jones would gain a couple spots in Stage 1 and finished in 19th.

Both of the LEGACY MOTOR CLUB entries would fight their way through the 140-lap Stage 2 as the No. 42 and No. 43 LEGACY MOTOR CLUB teams continued to tune on their Camry’s during multiple pit stops. Erik Jones finished the second stage in 27thwhile Nemechek finished in 30th.

The final stage of the race really saw the pit strategies start to come into place as just shy of 100 laps remained to close out the Enjoy Illinois 300. Both the No. 42 Bommarito and No. 43 Family Dollar teams rolled the dice and tried to get on a different pit strategy than the rest of the field. Unfortunately, as the drivers both climbed inside the top-10, the cards didn’t fall in their favor, resulting in both drivers having to make a green-flag pit stop for tires and fuel relegating them a lap down. Erik Jones and the No. 43 Family Dollar team would go on to finish in 26th, one lap down and John Hunter Nemechek and the No. 42 Bommarito LEGACY MOTOR CLUB team finished the race in 27th-place, one lap down.

JOHN HUNTER NEMECHEK | No. 42 BOMMARITO AUTOMOTIVE GROUP TOYOTA CAMRY XSE

START: 33RD | FINISH: 27TH | POINTS: 25TH

Quoting John Hunter Nemechek:

“Unfortunately, we were lacking some speed this weekend that put us behind from the start. The No. 42 Bommarito LEGACY MOTOR CLUB team worked hard trying to throw different things at it all weekend. We’ll continue to look everything and try to get better.”

ERIK JONES | No. 43 DOLLAR TREE TOYOTA CAMRY XSE

START: 22ND | FINISH: 26TH | POINTS: 26TH

Quoting Erik Jones:

“It’s tough, battling all day, balance wasn’t great, we were back and forth so, it was a tough day resulting in a bad finish. Hopefully go onto Sonoma next weekend and find bit more speed.”
